Home of the 'Wankel' (rotary engine)

In the 1960s, Mazda invested heavily in efforts for the development of the 'Wankel' (rotary engine). Not only was the company seeking to build a better and more efficient engine, the development of the rotary engine provided a way for Mazda to prominently stand out - not only from fellow Japanese auto companies - but from auto manufacturers worldwide.

From 1967's Cosmo Sport to the three editions of the RX-7 and the more recent RX-8, Mazda is the World's only manufacturer of rotary engines. The company's strategy paid off - as Mazda quickly became an exporter to the rest of the world (MazdaCanada in the 1960's, and then the American market (1970).

Fun Facts:

• Mazda is named after the ancient Zoroastrian god of wisdom, intelligence and harmony 'Ahura Mazda' (a god from the very early civilizations in West Asia).
• Mazda partnered with Ford Motor Company (1979-2010), with Ford's stake in Mazda from shrinking to 3% of Mazda stock by 2010.
• The Ford Probe was built in a new Mazda assembly plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
• Mazda assisted Ford in development of the 1991 Ford Explorer.
• Mazda introduced the world's first 'Miller Cycle' automotive engine (used in the 1995 Millenia luxury sedan).
