A Bit of History for Mitsubishi

Origins and Launch

Originally Mitsubishi was named Diamond-Star Motors (DSM) and incorporated in 3Q 1985, choosing a site in Normal, IL for NA operations. The facility was completed in 1Q 1988, with product launching of the first two models (Mitsubishi Eclipse, and Plymouth Laser) in 3Q 1988, and a Grand Opening in 4Q 1988.

Major Milestones

In 4Q 1991, Mitsubishi bought out Chrysler's shares of Diamond Star Motors, officially renaming the company as 'Mitsubishi Motor Manufacturing of America, Inc.' (3Q 1995). 1995 also saw MMNA produce its 1,000,000th vehicle, production of the first Eclipse Spyder convertible and a celebration of the company's 10th Anniversary. In 3Q 2009, Mitsubishi celebrated production of its 3,000,000th vehicle.

Award-Winning Automobiles

Two models built by MMNA won awards in 2004: 1) The J.D. Power Initial Quality Gold Award for the Dodge Stratus, and 2) The J.D. Power Initial Quality Bronze Award for the Mitsubishi Galant. In 2005, Mitsubishi's Endeavor model was awarded J.D. Power's Silver Award for midsize SUV segment by IQS survey. In May 2007, Car & Driver awarded Mitsubishi's Eclipse their Gold Star of Approval, while the Mitsubishi Galant was awarded J.D. Power's Silver Award in in June 2008 for midsize car segment (also via IQS survey). In January of 2009, Mitsubishi's Manufacturing Division was named "Company of the Year" at the Annual Urban Wheel Awards by On Wheels, Inc. as a part of the honoring of organizations for diversity within the automotive industry.

Fun Facts:

• The Mitsubishi Eclipse has won over 25 national vehicle awards (from Car and Driver, Popular Science, Consumers Digest, Road & Track, et al.).
• The 2010 Mitsubishi Galant was given a 5-star rating for side crash (front/rear seats), a 5-star rating for frontal crash (passenger side) - as well as 4-star ratings for frontal crash (driver side) and rollover safety by the NHTSA.
• MMNA Manufacturing Division in Normal, IL has both the ISO 14001 environmental and ISO 9001 quality certifications.
