HISTORY OF SMITH SPECIALTY AUTOMOTIVE

Dave Smith officially began business as Smith Specialty Automotive in 1997 at 2018 E. Spruce Circle.  Deric Davis came on board in June 1998 to help and they worked together for a year at that location, then moved to behind Tire Town at the corner of Spruce and Rogers Road.  With a loose alliance with Tire Town we worked on many vehicles for dealerships like Sunflower Dodge and Ancona Honda until the economy took a turn after September 2001.  Fortunately, we had continued to develop our reputation for doing quality work and continued to grow without the dealership work.

Other people that have been instrumental in our growth are Steve Hunter, Technician from Louisiana 2000-2001, Cory Thrall, Service Writer from North Dakota, and Rick Scarff, Technician from Olathe 2002-2006, Janelle Spencer, Service Writer from Olathe 2000-2002, and Chris Costello, Service Manager from Overland Park, 2005-2009.  Donald Fulghum, presently part-time, has been working with our company since 2004.

In September 2003 we moved again to 808 N. Meadowbrook Drive, where the old OTRX trucking company was.  As a side note, OTRX began in 1985 and grew to over 520 trucks with sales near $64 million in 1997, and was a local star until the trucking industry took a hit in 2001.  They closed quickly and left the property vacant until Mike Hales Sr. purchased the property at auction.  We rented the property for over 5 years thinking that the larger facility would allow us to grow.  We did not grow during those years but are thankful for our loyal customers that continued to come in even though we were in a hidden location.  We jumped on the opportunity to purchase a building on Lindenwood Drive where Enterprise Rent-A-Car was for 15 years.

We finally found a permanent home and moved in to 310 N. Lindenwood Drive on January 14, 2009.  It is truly a miracle that the financing worked out during this time of deep recession.  We are thankful for God’s provision.  We are also thankful to in a more efficient and visible location. Please stop in and see our new facilities!
